REGORIKTION THE FIRST YEAR
ReGoriktion is an attempt to resurrect myself as a painter. I studied painting at the art school. And painted bus tickets from 1979 until 1987. After that I went more into audiovisual installation, and all kinds of other arts. At the end of the nineties it was only texts. From 2000 to 2008 I choose to be out of The Arts. In 2009 I came back, gingerly.
In 2010 I planned a serious come-back, giving myself two years. This “ReGoriktion” is supported by the VGC of Brussels.
JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2010
I make four albums with photographs I took in our garden a year before. There is one album per season. These are work material. The photos will be painted in another frame. I prepared them awaiting a studio.
I find a studio in the former brewery Belle-Vue. Along the Brussels canal.
Inside the brewery are many studios and many artists. Everybody must build their own walls etc. So do I.
First, to run in the studio, I make ‘Bus ticket comparisons’. The same kind of paintings I did in the early eighties. Now on laminated wood with enamel paint. And with maturity.
I write a mantra on my wall: THE JOY NOT THE JOB.
I start doing paintings after the photo’s in the season-albums. On laminated wood with enamel paint. Then only parts of photos. Now on paper (less expensive). Then more garden slices. I am not so glad with the ‘just a nice image’-look of this work.
JULY – AUGUST 2010
To free myself I explore ‘palette’-painting as a technique. These are made in ecoline ink on paper. After an old back and white photo book of Tirol.
Folding back the sides of such a painting, it looked like a box. Writing text on it, it looked like a book. I love this process and result.
I make a complete bookshop this way! There are two series.
SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER 2010
I paint the garden-slices in the ‘palette’ technique now but they all look horrible. An even more ‘just a nice image’-effect.
Then I learn that the only way to improve these ‘just a nice image’-paintings, is destroying them radically in one way or another… For instance: by cutting letters out of them to make this work on the wall: “Two paintings improved to three new compositions”
In fact every way denying ‘the image’ is OK. Finally, the best result is given by the simple cut-in-two, one part up-side down and a 90° turn. I am so enthusiast about this, that I ‘improved’ all my 2009 paintings by sawing them in two.
So now I am free now to make ‘just a nice image’-paintings because I destroy them just the same! But instead of that, I start a silly game which turned out to look quite good.
Something with the titles of the articles from a Belgian Art magazine.
There is no ecstatic attempt. Nor an illustrating approach. It is only adopting some play rules.
DECEMBER 2010 – JANUARY 2011
Suddenly I realise that in the “Garden slice”- paintings the photographic exactitude is the most important feature. One has to see the actual photograph through the painting. It is the composition inside the framed photo where it is all about. Not the painting of it.
So I started colouring big photo-copies taken from my albums.
A whole new world is opening because… there are way’s and way’s of colouring…
And there is the cutting-in-two-‘improvement’ also… ‘improved colourings’…
And another photocopy of the same photo can be coloured differently…
And then they can be switched too…
And a multiplication to much bigger sizes is very easily made.
Wow, there is some perspective here!
FEBRUARY – MARCH 2011
I continue the colouring discovery.
I try the old “églomisé” technique or “Painted behind glass”.
I play ‘Soft H-art Art’, every once in a while.
Presentation work for this Namahn exhibition.
And so the first year
